Introduction
The RediGate Edge is a ruggedized field proven edge-of-network front end processor designed for industrial field applications and Internet of Things (IoT). This single device enables a seamless migration path for quicker data acquisition, automatic communication failover, cybersecurity, bandwidth management, and protocol conversion throughout your entire industrial communication network.
With a wide selection of industry standard and legacy protocols, the RediGate can gather data from almost any field device and deliver it to your enterprise data systems. Combining our Advanced Configuration Environment (ACE) with several application programming languages, the RediGate can be easily programmed for most applications.
The RediGate Edge included an integrated cellular modem, Ethernet, and serial communication ports, depending on the needs of the end user’s application. Utilizing its native MQTT client, the RediGate Edge directly interfaces with messaging middleware/data brokers, new and legacy SCADA hosts, ERP systems, Leak Detection, Maintenance Systems and other enterprise applications. Elecsys also provides a hosted M2M solution for remote monitoring of field equipment, as well as middleware solutions for Modbus or OPC-aware customer SCADA/EMS host systems.
This manual provides information describing the hardware for the Lindsay RediGate Edge products. It details the hardware components, technical specifications, and other information that may be needed to configure the device.
The RediGate Edge consists of hardware circuitry mounted in a rugged metal enclosure and running a Linux operating system. RediGate Edge units are shipped fully tested and may be pre-loaded with customer-specific configurations prior to shipment.

The device is suitable for use in Class 1, Division 2, Groups A, B, C and D Classified Hazardous Locations or non-hazardous location only. Class, Division, and Group are defined as:
Class defines the general nature of the hazardous material in the surrounding atmosphere. Class 1 is for locations where flammable gases or vapors may be present in the air in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures.
Division defines the probability of hazardous material being present in an ignitable concentration in the surrounding atmosphere. Division 1 locations are presumed to be hazardous. Division 2 locations are areas where gas, dust, or vapors can exist under abnormal conditions.
Group defines the hazardous material in the surrounding atmosphere. Groups A to D are defined as follows:
Group A – Atmosphere containing acetylene, gases or vapors of equivalent hazards.
Group B – Atmosphere containing hydrogen, gases, or vapors of equivalent hazards.
Group C – Atmosphere containing ethylene, gases, or vapors of equivalent hazards.
Group D – Atmosphere containing propane, gases, or vapors of equivalent hazards.
For the device to be approved for hazardous locations, it must be installed according to the National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 501 (or Canadian Electrical Code, Section 18), and any local code requirements, if applicable.
DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT CABLES WHEN ENERGIZED, UNLESS POWER HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE EQUIPMENT OR THE AREA IS KNOWN TO BE FREE OF IGNITABLE CONCENTRATIONS OF FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES.
When installing units in a hazardous area, make sure all installation components selected are labeled for use in such areas. Installation and maintenance must be performed only when the area is known to be non-hazardous. Installation or maintenance in a hazardous area could result in personal injury or property damage.
Specific Conditions of Use
Peripheral devices should be kept at least 25 mm away from the main device.
These devices are open-type devices and are required to be installed in a suitable enclosure for the environment such that the devices can only be accessed with use of a tool.
The equipment shall be installed in an enclosure that provides a minimum ingress protection of IP 54 in accordance with EN IEC 60079-0 and accessible only by use a tool.
The equipment is intended for use in pollution degree 2 industrial environment, as defined in EN 60664-1.
Ensure that the rated input voltage is not exceeded in service.
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
This device complies with Part 15 of FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
Class A: FCC Warning! This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at their own expense.

Operation
Mounting Instructions
The RediGate Edge is intended to be installed in a Restricted Access Location, defined as a location for equipment where both of the following apply:
Access can only be gained by service persons or by users who have been instructed about the reasons for the restrictions applied to the location and about any precautions that shall be taken; and
Access is through the use of a tool or lock and key, or other means of security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the location.
When mounting the unit, allow sufficient space to connect the cables to the enclosure. Mounting is accomplished by the included DIN-rail bracket (using 35mm top hat DIN rail).
Pull down the slider of the DIN-rail bracket located at the back of the unit.
Insert the top of the DIN rail into the slot just below the upper hook of the DIN-rail bracket.
Latch the unit firmly on to the DIN rail as shown in the illustrations below.
Once the unit is mounted properly, you will hear a click and the slider will rebound back into place automatically.
To release the DIN-rail bracket:
Pull down the slider of the DIN-rail bracket.
Rotate the bottom of the unit upward, away from the DIN rail.
Power
Connect power to the RediGate using a two-position plug (Phoenix Contact #5452549 or compatible). The orientation of positive and neutral wires as viewed from the front side of the RediGate is illustrated using the following symbol located on the product overlay:
ATTENTION: The wiring for the input terminal block must be done by a skilled person. The wire type should be copper (Cu).
ATTENTION: The product is intended to be supplied by a UL Listed Power Unit marked “L.P.S.” (or “Limited Power Source”) and rated 9 to 48 VDC, 1.2 A (min.), Tma = 70 C. If you are using a Class I adapter, the power cord must be connected to a socket-outlet with an earthing connection.

Grounding the Device
Grounding and wire routing help limit the effects of noise due to electromagnetic interference (EMI). The grounding screw (M4-type screw) is located on the top panel. When you connect a wire to the grounding screw, the noise is routed directly from the metal chassis to the ground point. The grounding wire must have a minimum diameter of 3.31 mm2.
LEDs and Button Operation
The RediGate Edge has four status LEDs at the top that indicate the operational state of the unit. The status LEDs operate with several colors and blink patterns to indicate the state of operation under different conditions. Other LEDs indicate communication via Ethernet, serial ports, and the cellular modem (only valid if using correct configuration, SIM card, and an active cellular account). A RESET button on the top panel provides several functions (such as reboot), depending on the current state of operation.
